Habitat for Humanity – Orange County
With the work site shut down for the week of the 4th of July, I figured it’s a great time to give a shout-out to a great cause. Habitat for Humanity Orange County is in the process of building about 50 energy efficient homes in a small community off of Rogers Road in Chapel Hill, called “Phoenix Place”. With 5 homes completed, they still have a long way to go before they wrap this location up.
Affordable housing is a tricky problem, but Habitat seems to have found a winning combination of volunteer, community and sweat-equity to create a lasting legacy. Habitat depends heavily on volunteer labor to complete these houses in an affordable fashion. If you are looking for a good cause to contribute your time to while picking up some very handy skills, look no farther than Habitat for Humanity. While they can always use volunteers, if you would rather donate money or materials, both are also welcome. You can contact Habitat directly at the link above for donations or drop off your used or reclaimed building materials at the Restore of Durham & Orange County. If you are having work done on your home, consider taking that old vanity or sink, or as we did recently our old but still serviceable skylights to the Restore. Not only are you saving these materials from the landfill by giving them a new life, you are also helping fund Habitat, as proceeds from the sale of these items go to the Durham & Orange county Habitat.
