Composting

I once heard a farmer poking a little fun at us city folks. We put all of our food waste, lawn clippings, etc. in plastic bags, put them in a big garbage can, and pay the city to pick it up. Then we drive to a garden supply store, and pay for more plastic bags filled with soil or compost. Seems kind of funny, doesn’t it?
The truth of the matter is that long before people threw away items in their kitchen garbage, they just threw them outside. (Remember, we’re talking about natural items, before the days of cookie wrappers and yogurt cups.) When food or other organic material is left alone, it begins to break down into the soil, providing nutrients and minerals that make for healthy plants.

But how can us “city folk” take advantage of this? As people become more and more interested in living green, clean and visually pleasing ways to compost are coming to market. Drums and other composting systems (like this one) are becoming very easy to find for under $100.

So save the landfill, and do yourself and your home garden a favor by composting!
